GridPlus Opens Pre-Sales for its Lattice1 Hardware Wallet

The Lattice1 is the most versatile and secure hardware wallet ever built

Austin, TX May 10, 2019: GridPlus has announced that the long awaited Lattice1 hardware wallet is now open for pre-sale, with expected delivery to the first customers coming this August. The Lattice1 is a robust hardware wallet that achieves greater levels of security than any hardware wallet built for the blockchain ecosystem to date. The technology platform utilizes multiple chip sets, secure environments, an anti-tamper mesh, segmented WiFi connectivity,  and physically uncloneable functions (PUFs) to provide a sophisticated key management solution that blends offline storage with online accessibility.

The concept of the Lattice1 was developed in early 2017 by the ConsenSys-incubated GridPlus team. It was built to facilitate real time payments and provide a remotely accessible environment to securely sign cryptographic messages. Founder Dr. Karl Kreder states:

“Adoption of blockchains is being held back by poor user interfaces arising from the complexity of key management. The Lattice1 solves key management by abstracting keys to broadly understood smart cards. This gives anyone that understands debit cards the ability to use cryptocurrencies.”

The Lattice1 utilizes three separate chips: a general compute environment (which runs Linux), a secure compute environment (which draws the screen and handles cryptography-based logic), and a secure element which stores the private keys and makes signatures. The communication pathways between the chips is stringently restricted such that only highly structured data can be passed from one environment to the next. This provides greater levels of security than any other hardware wallet, while also allowing remote access through pairing with external devices.

The Lattice1 encases all sensitive areas in a wire mesh which is monitored continuously for continuity from the moment of provisioning to end-of-life (EOL). The wire mesh is composed of multiple circuits with 6mm (2x the thickness of a human hair) width and spacing. The Laser Direct Structured (LDS) part is made by drawing the traces in three dimensions using a laser followed by an electrolysis plating process of Cu-Ni-Ag. If a circuit is ever compromised  by a hacker attempting to tamper with the electronics, the Lattice1 will detect the intrusion and securely destroy all sensitive information. Users can, at any time, recover their funds using backups, either via seed phrases or with encrypted backups stored on SafeCards.

SafeCards for additional security and portability

Along with the Lattice1, the GridPlus team will be shipping its SafeCards. SafeCards look like debit or credit cards and utilize secure elements to store keys and other secrets. We believe this is the most robust way humans have currently devised to store a digital secret in physical space. The entire payments industry already relies upon physical cards with secure chip elements; it is time to bring this technology to the blockchain ecosystem as well. 

The GridPlus team plans to begin writing applications that leverage the security features of the Lattice1. The team has also open-sourced an SDK so that any other developer can write applications for the Lattice1 too. Some applications that may benefit from the Lattice1 will be:

  • Backing up private keys onto one or more SafeCards, leveraging physically uncloneable functions (PUFs)

  • Automatic permissioned recurring payments

  • Atomic swap transactions using HTLCs between ETH and BTC

  • Running a node to route all crypto transactions and/or web browsing through TOR

  • Running an IPFS node and routing ENS names to provide simple access to the decentralized web

  • Connecting the Lattice1 to an app box that is staking or validating on Ethereum or other blockchains

  • Watching your Plasma chain using data stored on the Lattice1’s expandable storage
